DT & Woodwork
The Cothill Design Workshop allows our pupils to get their hands on a range of tools and resources.
The junior pupils (Years 4 & 5) have prep challenges involving a variety of exciting projects. They may be asked to jump a marble over a large gap, build a crane to hold a weight at the greatest distance or construct a balloon-powered vehicle. A recent challenge was to build ballistas to hurl table tennis balls the length of the workshop into a plastic tub. Outside of prep activities, pupils use their breaks and weekends to further investigate the possibilities of the materials and tools in their own creative and exploratory ways. Help and advice is always available, but every effort is made to inspire an independent, hands-on philosophy. The true educational value of the workshop lies not only in the finished projects, but in every step and every setback encountered and overcome along the road to completion.
Woodwork is a hugely popular activity at Cothill, and there is always a lot going on in the woodwork room, both in free time and lessons. Our pupils are encouraged to try their hand at a whole variety of different woodwork projects and creative talents are allowed to flourish. "PC" (as he is fondly known throughout the school) is the teacher in charge.
He is always available to help the boys with their projects and, just as importantly, to provide a friendly, supportive environment where boys can be boys and get their hands dirty in the great business of making stuff, from boot racks to marble runs to go-carts!
